Words Still Matter

NOVAGOLD

At a time when conventional wisdom tells us that – when it comes to words, anyway – less is definitely more, NOVAGOLD bet on the power of storytelling to communicate, inspire, and persuade. Their 2019 annual report, designed by helveticka, leads with a big, bold statement on the cover. A 2,200-word report from the company’s president and CEO details NOVAGOLD’s achievements over the year. The chairman of the board of directors follows with a 20-page letter that covers the gold industry, discusses wild cat conservation, and quotes Aristotle. And the 48-page book closes with a section devoted to the people of the Yukon-Kuskokwim region of southwestern Alaska, where NOVAGOLD has a 50-percent interest in one of the top-tier gold assets in the world. Taking a page from Svetlana Alexievich’s masterful Voices from Chernobyl: The Oral History of a Nuclear Disaster, helveticka reviewed transcripts from several interviews conducted by NOVAGOLD and constructed a cohesive and compelling narrative around subsistence living, job opportunities, and the importance of responsible, sustainable development. In a collaboration that dates back to 2013, Redefining A Tier-One Asset is the seventh consecutive annual report by helveticka for NOVAGOLD.
