For residents of the Yukon-Kuskokwim region, shing, hunting, and harvesting aren’t just hobbies. They’re integral to the Yup’ik way of life – a means by which families maintain ties both to the land and to their culture all year long. Megan Leary (below), who was crowned Miss World Eskimo-Indian Olympics in 2013, is proud of her ability to support herself through trapping, hunting, and shing. Aniak’s Bruce Morgan II (right) knows that a single moose can provide for his whole family for an entire year. And Ricky Ciletti, who spent some time living in the city in the lower 48, recognized that returning to his home was a way to slow down; to reconnect with his roots through bow-hunting. Most who reside in the Yukon-Kuskokwim region are actively involved in preserving and maintaining this subsistence way of life.
