June MacAtee, vice president of the Calista Corporation, and Willie Kasayulie, who sits on the corporation’s board of directors, are just two of the people who are working hard to ensure that those who live in the isolated villages and communities along the Yukon-Kuskokwim River have access to opportunities they’ve never had before. Back in 1997, Kasayulie and others began a process that would ensure rural schools were treated fairly when it came to allocating state construction dollars. As a result, several regional schools will see an in ux of millions of dollars over the next few years. Donlin Gold is doing its part as well by funding an internship program through the Kuskokwim Native Association, and working with organizations to increase educational and training opportunities throughout
the region.
