LIFE magazine photograph by Chad Ramsey
“That was my highest point,” recalled Bergoltsev on being published in the magazine that, for him, served as a manual for his art and what he calls Real Life Photography. “My favorite photography,” he muses,
“is when you don’t know about it. When you are natural. When you are as you are, not as you want to look.” This photograph, which appeared in the March 13, 1970 issue of LIFE, came just two years before the magazine ceased publication – and Real Life Photography came to an end. “Look at any newspaper now in this country,” Bergoltsev says. “What do you see? Almost all pictures are similar. One face or two
face or five face, all of them are looking at the photographer, and waiting when you push the knob.
For whom it’s interesting? Only for them and their relatives. Not for readers. There is no life. It’s posing.”
