“Twenty-five years this waited to be published,” says Bergoltsev. This was made not by me, but by God. I couldn’t think about the history of the picture. I couldn’t think a moment. I simply got the picture.” Several times Bergoltsev has been asked whether he knew about the conspiracy when he took the photograph.
“If only!” he laughs. “I might have been able to warn him. What would have happened to me? I do not know. But history would have been different.” Bergoltsev liked Khrushchev, if only because he demonstrated to the world Stalin’s true nature. “He was an individual,” he says, “unlike the many figures who conspired behind his back.”
