Christian ivory carving, established in Rome as early as the second century, was generally used for small pieces - plaques, book covers, diptychs, et al. - and had a kind of intimacy not intended for public view. Lane has adapted his icon style toward the creation of a series of faux ivories. “They seem to capture the heart of iconographic design,” he says, “and may even have given early iconographers ideas about where and how to paint highlights.”
