PRIOR TO MODERN MINING
success story
1
GREEN FROM GOLD
At its peak, the Golden Cross
mine in New Zealand directly employed over 243 people and provided an annual payroll in excess of $10 million. The open
pit and underground project
ceased operations in 1999 due to a combination of low gold prices and the discovery of a historic landslide beneath the tailings impoundment. It became the rst modern mine in New Zealand to move into planned closure and nal rehabilitation
and reclamation. Its footprint is now lush, green farmland used for grazing, wetlands, and native habitat.
