Santa Cristina López is a young woman from the Ayllu Jesús
de Machaca, a community of indigenous people near the town of Potosi, Bolivia. She and her ve brothers and sisters grew
up in Chalviri Alta, a small, remote village nestled in the high mountain terrain of Cerro Rico. Santa Cristina spent her childhood helping her parents raise livestock to support the family. “As a child,
I suffered a great deal because we had no money and we only made a living from our llama and sheep herds,” she said. “My parents did not want me to study because
I was needed to assist with the daily chores; none of my siblings completed high school.”
